Important Information

What is a McKenzie Friend? A McKenzie Friend is someone who assists a litigant in person in a court of law in England and Wales. They cannot provide legal advice or act as your legal representative, but they can:

  • Provide moral support
  • Take notes during hearings
  • Help organize documents and paperwork
  • Quietly give advice on points of law and procedure
  • Suggest questions to ask witnesses

McKenzie Friends cannot:

  • Act as your legal representative
  • Speak on your behalf in court (unless the judge grants permission)
  • Conduct litigation (e.g., sign court documents)
  • Provide legal advice if they are not qualified

Always seek independent legal advice from a qualified solicitor or barrister for complex legal matters.
